Police in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, have arrested a 34-year-old woman on suspicion of corpse abandonment after she allegedly placed her newborn son in the toilet at her boyfriend's apartment and tried to flush it.

Police said Aya Hanzawa, a salesperson, has admitted to the allegation. Kyodo News reported that she told police she attempted to flush the infant down the toilet between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. at the apartment in Meito Ward on Saturday. But she was unable to do so because the 30-cm-long infant got stuck.

Her boyfriend was not home at the time.

On Saturday night, Hanzawa visited a hospital in Tempaku Ward with the dead newborn in her arms. A nurse contacted the police after Hanzawa told the staff that "the child [she] birthed at home died."

I am sure she caused baby's dead, one way or another even if baby was born dead. For example, has she been going to medical check ups? Was the baby born in a health clinic or hospital?

Can you imagine you are born as a little baby and your own mother kill you in day one, then trying to flush your body to toilet? It is horrible.

Let's not look at the societal and institutional reasons why a woman would see no way out but to commit the unthinkable act of neonaticide. But what should we do? This kind of news is disgusting, who wants to read that?

As a mother myself, I'm quite shocked about this woman trying to flush down her newborn. However, if the child was really only 30 cm long, it's very likely that she wasn't pregnant for 9 months and that the child was delivered way too early and therefore was dead. A normal child should be around 50 cm long (Japanese babies maybe a little bit smaller, I admit), 30 cm is the size after 5-6 months when women don't have that much of a baby belly yet. Maybe she really had no idea that she was pregnant and was extremly shocked herself when that baby came out of her and had no idea what do do; maybe she was even on the toilet when it came out and didn't realize at first what was going on. Don't get me wrong - killing your child is a horrid deed and should be punished, but in this case, I wonder what has happened here.

A baby near its birthday can weigh a few pounds depending on when it is born. So it is not easy to flush a baby into the toilet bowl. But a mother must no sense of motherhood to flush her baby down a toilet bowl. Or the decency not to do so.

This again!?! Last week there were 3 or 4 cases like this where it involved a mother killing the newborn (and 1 in the most gruesome of ways) Something MUST be done, man!
